The Twic Mayardit community in NSW are originally from Twic County, a region near
the border of Northern and Southern Sudan.
The Twic region has been caught in the middle of long years of war between the North &
South, which ended in 2005. The community has been traumatised and is struggling to rebuild
after raids by government militias and rebel forces, as well as ongoing conflict over land.

In May 2008 a plane crashed in Southern
Sudan
killing 27 people, mainly provincial leaders from the Twic Mayardit community. This left over 44 children and young adults orphaned or with only
one parent. The plane crash left the children with further trauma and grief, and in great financial hardship.
The children are being cared for by relatives who need support to send the children to school and pay for accommodation,
food, and medical expenses. Many of the children are barely old enough to attend school, but if there is not
enough money for their school fees, they will not even get the chance to start an education.
The aim of this campaign is to provide a safe & supported environment in which the Twic Mayardit orphans can develop
their potential.
