Volunteers with
experience and expertise wanted for the following positions:
· Development Officer &
Fund raising
· Website design and maintenance.
· Graphic design
Development Officer & Fund raising
This position could involve as few as five hours per week in the first instance but it is
envisaged that it may eventually involve up to fifteen hours which could be provided on a ‘job shared’ basis.
In addition to providing services directly to HARDA the volunteer may be asked to assist participating member organisations
from time to time.
Volunteers should be aware that because of its limited financial resources at this stage
of its development HARDA is restricted to fund raising strategies which involve little or no outlay ‘up front’.
It will be important that the development officer works as part of the volunteer secretariat
team, but once established s/he may elect to perform much of the work from her/his home office. Experience, a successful background
in fund raising and a commitment to HARDA’s humanitarian mission are essential.
Website design
& maintenance
Volunteers with professional expertise in website development and maintenance are needed
to develop and maintain websites for HARDA Youth and Young People. Their organisations would benefit greatly from professional
volunteer support.
Volunteers should indicate the amount of time that they can reasonably allocate to this work.
They will be entered on HARDA’s Skills Register and requests from participating organisations will be processed through
the Secretariat to ensure that they are consistent with volunteers’ notional time allocation.
Graphic design & layout
Volunteers with professional expertise in graphic design and layout are needed to design
promotional materials, especially newsletters, flyers and brochures, for HARDA and its participating member organisations.
Volunteers should indicate the amount of time that they can reasonably allocate to this work.
They will be entered on HARDA’s Skills Register and requests from participating organisations will be processed through
the Secretariat to ensure that they are consistent with volunteers’ notional time allocation.
Background:
The Horn of Africa Relief and Development Agency Inc is a non-government, not-for-profit
public benevolent organisation. It is a registered charity in New South Wales and has gift
deductible recipient status with the Australian Tax Office.
HARDA is an African Australian organisation. Seven of the nine members of the Executive Committee
are refugees or migrants from the Horn of Africa countries who have settled successfully in Australia. They are actively involved in supporting humanitarian
work for recently arrived refugees in New South Wales,
many of whom have come from horrific experiences of deprivation, trauma and torture. In addition they are committed to using
their contacts through the Horn of Africa diaspora to identify and seek support for high value humanitarian projects in Africa.
HARDA has three main goals and objectives:
1. To act as a catalyst and entrepreneur between the Federal Government’s AusAID, Australian
based aid agencies and African NGOs. The goal is to identify high value individual humanitarian aid projects and deal directly
with the organisations ‘on the ground’ (e.g. the Dagahmadow school project in Ethiopia).
2. To develop and reinforce its role as a body which can speak with one voice to government as
an advocate on issues of concern in resettlement services (e.g. housing, education, employment, health). To reinforce its
credibility as an umbrella organisation in New South Wales the Agency
is currently engaged in regular, ongoing consultation with representatives from individual regions and countries of the Horn
of Africa (the Sudan, Somalia,
Eritrea, Ethiopia,
Kenya, Uganda
and Djibouti) resident in New South Wales.
3. To provide support and professional advice to participating organisations
(including youth and young people from the Horn of Africa) about submission writing, funding, sponsorship, event planning,
governance (rights and responsibilities), financial management, website development, policy development, legal issues (including
incorporation and risk management), marketing and graphic design
HARDA receives funding for individual projects from time to time but has no recurrent funding
from government or any other source to conduct its advocacy and support roles. Management, financial and administration skills
are provided by four part time volunteers with a broad range of professional experience (‘the secretariat’). They
are supported from time to time by one-off legal and accounting services and advice provided pro bono on an ‘as needed’
basis. In order to expand its support services it proposes to develop a formal Skills Register and is seeking to register
experienced volunteers with relevant expertise. |
